Treadmill in the Rain

I have a couple of questions for the hard core and the experienced runners. I read several other running blogs and it seems like everybody does all of their running outdoors. Does anybody hit the treadmill to train? I mix it up, but it always feels like running a certain pace outdoors is easier than on the treadmill. I put the incline at 1.5% to 2% to simulate running on the road. Does anybody else feel this way?

I have a 5k coming up this weekend and the forecast calls for rain. Probably not a terrible downpour, but the last time I ran in rain it was at last year's Surf City 5k and I was totally unprepared. What do people recommend? Running in as little as possible (shirt, shorts, shirtless?) or running pants and a hoodie or something in between? Any advice?

Thanks!

  1. Mike - I live in FL, which means I run in the rain all the time. I typically wear athletic / running shorts and some sort of lightweight dry-fit shirt. Obviously it won't keep you dry, but it is much more comfortable than wearing a t-shirt that will weigh you down big time.
I guess if you are more bold than I am going shirtless is the right way, as long as the temperature is not too low.
    Hope that helps!!

  2. I know a lot of runners do frown when i say this. but i do most of my training on the treadmill. Hence thats why i hardly talk about my mileage and etc. I usually do 6-9 miles on the treadmill 5 days a week and for the long run...i may do 18 (sets of 6/5/4/3 with 1-2 minutes in between). However all my pace start at: 7:50 and end at 6:20s hence all under 8s.

  3. Thanks Jono. You're right. I have a short pair of shorts and a tight (seriously, do they have to make them THAT tight?) Under Armor shirt I figured I would wear to to keep the wind and rain from slowing me down too much. February rain is butt ass cold so I won't be going shirtless, but probably couldn't pull that off anyway unless I was ripped and just a complete badass runner. Even then I'd feel ridiculous.

Morrissey, you seriously outclass me in the pacing department. 6:20?! Awesome. I run mostly on the treadmill just because I hate choking on traffic fumes, but I try to do my long runs outdoors like along the Long Beach bike path or Hermosa/Manhattan Beach paths. That's good to hear a marathoner like you does most of the hard work indoors. BTW, I like your blog. Keep it up.

    Thanks for the advice guys!
